What Now?

I guess Bush and the present American government didn't see this coming... so much for democracy.

Facts about Hamas:

- Hamas is a fundamentalist group that wants to establish an Islamic state on what it considers "historic Palestine," which includes modern-day Israel.
- In the election campaign, Hamas portrayed itself as an alternative to the corruption-plagued Fatah -- the group founded by Yasser Arafat and now led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that has dominated Palestinian politics for decades.
- Hamas' official charter calls for Israel's destruction, but that demand was not central to its platform in the elections. It refuses to recognize the right of the state of Israel to exist and opposes a U.S.-backed two-state solution.
- Its military wing, Izzedine al Qassam, has claimed responsibility for terrorist operations, including suicide bombings in Israel as well as attacks on Israeli troops and Jewish settlers in Gaza and the West Bank.
- Leaders Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi were killed in Israeli airstrikes.
- The United States and European Union list Hamas as a terrorist organization.
- Nearly half the Palestinian Authority's annual budget comes from the United States. The White House has suggested it could cut aid to a Hamas-led Palestinian Authority.

HAMAS IS A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.

THIS IS THE WORST POSSIBLE OUTCOME FOR PEACE IN THAT REGION.

PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT HAMAS OR THE PALESTIANIAN DECISION, UNTIL HAMAS CHANGES IT'S VIEW ON THE PEACE PROCESS AND THE LEGITIMACY OF ISRAEL AS THE JEWISH STATE.

so my question:

who do the Americans believe they are, announcing who should and should not be in power? they were elected in by a landslide - it is not up to you to determine who should lead a country that is not even on the same continent as you!

but that's just my opinion...cool blog...

Look... there are many pros and cons, with respect to American "bully'ism" in countries far removed from their own. I do often side on the cons, so I understand your distaste for american policy.

What I will say, in response to your post, is that American influence is key in that region, if we want the outcome to be peace.

I don't think anyone was ready for the Hamas party to come into power.

What bother's me the most, is that Hamas was allowed to be represented as a valid political party. If you look at the core of their existence and beliefs, you find the destruction of Israel and "western" thinking and the ethnic cleansing of Jews.

I can tell you with absolute certainty; Hamas has been the leader in terrorist bombings and suicide missions in Israel for well over 30 years.

Let's hope common sense prevails within the Hamas party.

Thanks for your post Casey!
